(Western Kentucky pulls off another 12 over a 5 seed upset)
Day one of the NCAA Tournament is in the books. My brackets are doing surprisingly well, thanks in large part to having complete confidence in Maryland and Western Kentucky after I saw their first round match-ups. No big surprises to speak of. There is stuff to discuss, like the heavily tattooed white guys on Northern Iowa and the cardiac episodes induced by Memphis early on in the day. But I'll get to those things later. Right now...I desperately need to sleep for more than 4 hours. This will be the first time in a long while. In the mean time, please feel free to leave some comments about your thoughts on the first day of the tournament or anything else you'd like to rant about. I'd love to hear from anybody and everybody as we move towards the weekend. This blog is a blog of the people after all. Day two of the madness is a mere 9 hours away.

Have to admit that I was very close to picking American over my boys, but in the end went with 'Nova. If they keep playing like they did in the first half, UCLA will be the last game of the season. I'm interested to see how 'Nova responds to playing American so close, cause now they get a big conference team with a history of getting it done in the tourney. By the way, 'Nova lost to Texas and Georgetown this season who were not very good this season, but have experienced a lot of success in recent history, UCLA fits the same bill as those two teams, I wonder if this is going to follow the same trend. Otherwise, there were some close games today, hopefully there are a couple more upsets on Friday.
ReplyDeletematt, you're pretty down on your own team.
ReplyDeleteit was a solid day for people who make strong picks, like me. i'm thinking pitt looks pretty good right now.
did anyone happen to catch what the tattoo was on the bicep of the guy from american? aristotles face? a shakespearean quote? pro deo et patria? i need to know what it was.
ReplyDeleteafter the first day of play i'm now fully confident in an all big east final four, and if you've seen who the only big east representative is in the south region, then your confidence should be doubled!
I want to draw everyone's attention to Club Trillion. A blog written by a senior/four year end of the bench sitter from OSU. Apparently getting a trillion on the box score is when you get into the game but have all zeros next to your name. This guy is hilarious.

Bill Simmons (of ESPN) had had at least two podcasts where he talks to Mark Titus (author of Club Trillion). His most recent was right before the tournament started. You can find that podcast if you look up Bill Simmons on ITunes.
ReplyDeleteDon't try to out blog Desmond Huntington CJS ... you will lose. Enough blog talk anyway, just check out a newspaper or other reputable media outlet and you can find this information first hand.
ReplyDeleteYeah...cause newspapers are doing GREAT right now. Thanks for the comment grandpa.
ReplyDeleteD-man, I think that you should rethink allowing people to post anonymously.
ReplyDeleteA heartless gutless coward is a heartless gutless coward...whether they give their name or not.
ReplyDeleteWhat should I do for the Pitt game? If I do too many running diaries...they'll get stale really quickly (as if they haven't already). I'm thinking of doing a hybrid diary/thoughts on the first two days of the tournament/commercial commentary/what I'm drinking and eating/who I'm talking with on the phone/etc.
This Utah State vs. Marquette game is fascinating. I love NCAA March Madness on demand!
Show your face anonymous! I've been the subject of too many of your posts.
ReplyDeleteSyracuse rolls on to the second round.
Desmond, I think you should do a detailed analysis of the coaches' (both head and assistant) attire for both teams.
ReplyDeletesince when did you get ncaa on demand?
The detailed analysis of the coaches' attire is Annie's job. Which means I'll have to call you guys during the game.
ReplyDeleteI get whatever the free online thingy is where one can watch all of the games via a streaming source.
That Marquette/Utah State game was fun...Marquette looked terrible. First year coaches usually don't do well in the tourney. I love the name Buzz though.
Phil, I am pretty down on my team...maybe its because I am surrounded by Bruin fans who are taunting me. By the way, the last 3 years I make one upset pick and document it on my blog. I know this is nothing bold as there are multiple upsets in the first round. This year I picked Dayton to upset WVU, it is documented. Out of any of the last 3 years, I thought this was the most bold and all I heard was praise for WVU, but thought they might be vulnerable. I am not going to give my blog address as it was pointed at that this is the blog to be, but DH can confirm it for you if he wants.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I hope that both Pitt and 'Nova respond to their "scares" by uping their play in the second round.
Ananymous, how exactly do you "out blog" someone?
