The One Shining Moment Phenomenon

(NORTH CAROLINA! Come on and raise up...)

Does anyone else find the "One Shining Moment" phenomenon fascinating? The fact that a cheezy late-80's prom song is synonymous with the NCAA Tournament is quite interesting. The song was originally intended to be used during CBS's coverage of college football. The decision to play the song after the NCAA championship game proved to be a good one. One Shining Moment was first played after the 1978 title game, and has been a fixture of March Madness ever since. Here are some quotes from reputable news sources:
  • "One Shining Moment is arguably the most famous song in sports." Wall Street Journal
  • "...The playing of the anthem 'One Shining Moment' has become as integral to the NCAA tournament and national championship as snipping the nets." USA Today
  • "One Shining Moment' is one of the great power ballads of all-time...one last heartfelt goodbye." Sports Illustrated
Please note that I'm NOT being sarcastic or snippy here. I look forward to hearing the song and watching the montage as much as anyone. I'm just intrigued that the song stands up and is downright important to a generation of people and basketball players that listen to Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, and Young Jeezy.

  1. Power ballads got a label out of that post?? And how did USA Today and the Wall Street Journal get labels, but not Sports Illustrated? This label "system" is spooky. I am working on a post about Jerry Wainwright's dumpy tweed suits (and a few other notable suit-wearers), if you will allow guest posts.

  2. Wow...someone is really stacking the ballot box with Anna Lou votes!

Where are all of the Reed backers on this blog?

  3. I've tried to vote for Lydia Cate about fifteen times today, but it will only register one vote. Do I need to vote on fifteen different computers? Or change my profile? I've seriously been trying to vote for my girl all day long!

  4. Oh shoot, I just voted for Anna Lou, which one was the baby next to Jay Wright??? Sorry if it was Lydia Cate then I meant to vote for her.

Anyway, is this the "Last" Shining Moment of this blog or is this thing going to continue. I have a vested interest in seeing this thing go farther then just April...any ideas DH.

  5. Just for the record, there's no ballot stuffing going on whatsoever. I voted once. Liz voted once. But Matt, looks like you voted for our girl when you meant to vote for Phil and Annie's - you can change your vote. May the voting wars continue.

  6. Matt...you can go back and change your vote if you feel so inclined.

Chaz...are you being totally honest when you say that you and Liz voted only once? Does Anna Lou have a bunch of fans that I don't know about? Are a bunch of family members reading this blog that I'm unaware of? I find this fascinating.

    May the voting wars continue!

  7. Full disclosure. Yes, Liz and I have each only voted once. That said, I might have mentioned the poll to a few friends and family - but this was all with the goal of getting people to stay reading your blog and to recruit a few more to it.

  8. okay, I am not real internet savy, I just changed my vote. Sorry Charles, your baby was definitely cute and it is nothing against her, but a baby has a special sheen to it when it stands next to a Final Four coach like Wright.

Next year, I will definitely have to deck my kids out in 'Nova gear to get some play on this thing...it appears that most of the die hards have only one little one, so hopefully I can win the competition by presenting the Gerk trio (yes DH this may be news you have not heard yet, at least I hope it will only be the trio next year).

  9. Suggestion.

Bring closure to this blog - or this segment of your blog - by Easter. No one is going to care about the tournament after "He is Risen". So get in what you can and then move on to another sports event - NHL playoffs? Or sit it out until next year.

    Just a suggestion.

  10. Bring closure???? I think this thing should be a full year event even with its own .com website...just a suggestion (by the way, right now is the perfect time to contact some coaches to talk about the season)
